Classic comic strips such as “Peanuts” and “Marmaduke” carry an appeal that has spanned generations. The longest-running comic strip, “The Katzenjammer Kids,” has been in print since 1897! Cartoonists have found incredibly creative solutions to the limited size and scale of the comic strip format, and the best have woven a clear point of view with an authentic sentimentality and a consistent sense of humor. The landscape of comic strips is incredibly varied: Garry Trudeau’s “Doonesbury” explores current events, Gary Larson’s “The Far Side” has philosophical overtones, and Cathy Guisewite’s “Cathy” is inspired by the minutiae of everyday life. No matter what stories they tell, great cartoonists elevate a few panels of printed illustration into hilarious and enduring works of art.
